Hitting the Detroit Area Beaches
Although there are no beaches within the city of Detroit, there are dozens within driving distance. Beautiful metro parks and other recreation areas are scattered across Michigan. In addition to the beach experience, the parks offer many acres of lake access, hiking trails, fishing, and other recreation. With over 3,200 miles of shoreline, it’s no surprise that Michigan is a great place to relax on the beach. Listed below are the areas with the best beach access near the city of Detroit.
Thelma G. Spencer Park
The 113 acre park offers a beautiful beach on a 38 acre lake with swimming and wonderful fishing that Michigan is famous for. Other features include picnic areas, row boat and pedal boat rentals, tennis courts, baseball diamond, playground, multi-purpose sports field, concession stand, sand volleyball, horseshoe pits, hiking and cross-country ski paths, tent rentals, and more. The park is located in Rochester, a mere 21 miles from the city of Detroit.
Metro Beach Metropark
Located in Mount Clemens, the metropark offers one mile of shoreline and a 1,600 foot boardwalk on Lake St. Clair. The spot is a heaven for boaters, swimmers, and fisherman. Picnicking, shore fishing, Nature Center, fitness and nature trails, boat launching area, and marina makes Metro Beach a perfect place for outdoor vacationing. Attractions also include an Olympic sized swimming pool, water slide, tennis and shuffleboard courts, miniature golf course, ice skating, ice hockey, ice fishing, skiing trails, and a par three 18 hole golf course. Metro Beach’s array of attractions makes it the perfect destination for Detroit vacationing no matter what time of year.
Pontiac Lake Recreation Area
Pontiac Lake Recreation Area is home to 3,800 acres of woodland terrain for camping and day use. The park is open all year around and offers summer and winter activities including picnicking, camping fishing, swimming, backpacking, and any outdoor vacationing activity. The park contains three campgrounds including a modern campground open from spring to fall and features electricity and shower/toilet buildings. The park features a modern concession stand, boat launch, bathhouse, toilet building, and metal detecting area. The park is located 30 miles from the city of Detroit in Waterford.
Bald Mountain Recreation Area
Located 31 miles out of Detroit in Lake Orion, Bald Mountain Recreation Area offers 4,637 acres of picnic area, shooting range, fishing lakes, two trout streams, a beach, hunting areas, and 15 miles of marked hiking and biking trains. The attraction is widely known for its eight miles of groomed cross country skiing trains and for its winter activities including snowmobiling, ice fishing, and sledding. The park area has some of the steepest foothills and rugged terrain in all of southeastern Michigan. Outdoor lovers will enjoy the view and the activities of Bald Mountain Recreation Area and its proximity to the city of Detroit.
