Woodstock 1969-2009: Original Posters

The original poster for Woodstock which was intended to be held in Wallkill, NY contents a depiction of the water bearer Aquarius. The image represents the precession of the equinox and the astrological time period known as the Age of Aquarius. The Wallkill poster was designed by David Byrd. After the license for the festival was revoked by the town of Wallkill, a mundane advertisement was issued in publications to inform the public that the festival had been moved to White Lake, NY. Due to the short lived relevance of the original Woodstock poster, very few copies were issued, and what has become one of the most famous images in rock and roll came to be.

The actual poster complete with the correct location of the festival has become an icon for the hippie generation as well as one of the most recognizable images in music history. The dove perched on the neck of a guitar was designed by Arnold Skolnick and was initially intended to resemble a catbird and was to be perched on a flute instead. The poster was crafted by Skolnick with scissors, paste, and colored paper. The inspiration came from Skolnick witnessing his daughter making paper cutouts. "An Aquarian Explosion" appears on the poster along with the location of White Lake, NY and lists the performers in the lower left hand corner.

Skolnick's poster became the symbol for Woodstock and represented the visual associated with music and counterculture at the time in which it was made. The Woodstock poster is a lasting symbol of the era as well as the visual aid for one of the most compelling stories of American social revolution. Some authentic reprints of the poster still hold value and some of the more rare posters of the event range anywhere from $100-$400. Reprints of the original colored paper version are affordable and obtainable at bargain prices online.
